My Brothers,
Brotherhood: More Than a Word
We call each other Brother.
We shake hands and say, “Great to see you, Brother.” We answer the phone with, “Hey Brother…”
But what does it really mean to be a Brother?
Is it just a word?
A definition?
Or is it something more, something we are called to live?
I would be interested to hear how each of you defines it.
To me, the word Brother should never be passive. It is not simply standing beside a member of our fraternity when things are easy and stepping away when difficulty arrives.
Brotherhood is real.
Brotherhood is being present when a man is tired… when he is losing.
It is sitting next to him and saying, “Get up. I’m here.”
It is holding one another to a standard, not out of obligation, but because we genuinely care.
Because we see what a man is capable of, even when he may not see it himself.
Brotherhood does not allow a man to remain where he is if he is capable of more. Nor does it tear him down, or those around him. It lifts. It supports. It challenges. It means sitting with a brother in his time of need, and crossing the invisible lines of Lodges and Districts to assist where and when it matters most. Brotherhood does not lower the standard. It helps men rise to meet the standard of our Craft
Fraternailly,
Right Worshipful Stephen Sparks
